Projects

Some examples of Sue's work:

Strategic development and implementation

  • Enabled Warwick Business School to create a differential advantage which adds value to its service to students, whilst at the same time raising its profile in the international community. This was achieved through the development and implementation of a strategy for the Business School's membership of the prestigious Programme of International Management (PIM). Effective marketing activity, supported by sound process design increased PIM take-up by 30% in one year and established Warwick as a location of choice for overseas students from partner universities.
  • Identified opportunities for a small professional firm to gain competitive advantage through the use of information technology by developing an Information Systems Strategy. The strategy covered issues of personnel development and cultural change as well as process redesign. Implementation of the strategy produced benefits by facilitating management of the organisation's knowledge base in such a way as to identify opportunities for cross-selling and improving the efficiency of administrative processes.
  • Commissioned to advise a steel stock-holding company on reversing declining profitability. Identified strategic redirection and operational improvements that enabled the firm to maximise its potential for profit generation.
  • Devised a marketing strategy for a cornerstone consultancy product for a newly set-up niche Human Resource consultancy, which enabled them to clarify their market positioning and potential target markets. As a result, the product has been successfully brought to market.

Performance improvement

  • Initiated, designed and developed an innovative, participative workshop-style review of a subsidiary business making £18 million annual profit. Energised the workforce to analyse areas of weakness and to develop practical solutions, resulting in empowered workers who owned problems and their solutions. Consequently, morale was improved, processes were redesigned and profit opportunities maximised.
  • Developed and delivered a training strategy to raise technical standards for a 70-strong finance function. As a result, not only did the service provided by the function improve, but also morale and commitment amongst finance staff was demonstrably higher.
  • Co-designer and co-facilitator of Warwick Business School's Full-time MBA "Customer Journey" project. The objectives of the project were to review the customer service culture and to identify opportunities for performance improvement. This was facilitated through a series of workshops involving staff members at all levels.

Problem-solving

  • Analysed the business implications of European Monetary Union (EMU) and advised the Board of a Utility of potential sources of competitive advantage. Developed and presented a series of workshops company-wide to raise awareness and initiate discussion amongst staff at all levels of the implications and potential of EMU. This project enabled the organisation to be proactive in developing strategies and capabilities for future events, rather than being forced into a time-critical reactive stance.
  • Initiated the multi-million pound Millennium computer Bug (Y2K) Programme for a Regional Electricity Company. Managed and motivated a cross-functional management team that also included consultants from PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Ultimately enabled the organisation to maintain excellent customer service delivery and to fulfil regulatory obligations.

Developing effective risk and control systems

  • Developed and implemented a Control and Risk Self Assessment process for a utility that raised risk and control awareness, leading to improvements in the cost effectiveness and appropriateness of risk management activities.
  • Numerous operational reviews, resulting in improved performance through effective processes and control systems.
